Whether you’re an avid Project Runway fan or if you dread shopping for new clothes, fashion is an integral part of our everyday lives. Different styles, patterns, and colors are only a few of the choices we make when it comes to getting dressed in the morning. But have you ever thought about the process that creates fashion? It’s likely that more skill and effort went into the shirt and shoes you’re wearing than you presume.
Maybe you have a young fashion fan at home, or are simply curious about the technology and skills required to be a fashion designer. Today, we’ll be taking a look into the world of fashion design and why parents should nurture their kids’ interest in it.
How is fashion designed?
The world of fashion design, like many other industries, has evolved to keep up with technological advancements. Today, the way we produce and consume fashion is greatly influenced (and improved!) by technology.
Many fashion designers use digital illustration to create their designs. To do so, designers use software tools to create designs from scratch using a mouse, or more commonly by drawing on a graphics tablet. Digital illustration is a specialized form of graphic design.
What technology and skills do fashion design professionals use?
There are two types of digital illustration tools that fashion designers use: bitmapped and vector. Bitmap software is more suited to painting, while vector programs are designed for drawing.
Vector-based tools, such as Inkscape or Edraw, are ideal for fashion design, as it stores designs as mathematical formulas that describe lines, shapes, and color fills, strokes, or gradients. This allows the designer to have complete control over every aspect of their designs, including how to show volume, shape, colors, and patterns.
Why is fashion design a good skill for my student to learn?
Maybe your kid really enjoys shopping and putting together outfits, or perhaps they have a natural eye for design. Regardless of their reasons, an interest in fashion design is a great motivator for kids to learn highly sought-after graphic design and digital illustration skills that are applicable to a variety of different careers. In addition, fashion design is a fun, creative outlet for kids, that allows them to express their personality through their own unique style.
How can my kid pursue a career in fashion design?
Pursuing a career in fashion design may seem like an unrealistic dream to many parents, since most young fashionistas and fashionistos will not grow up to become professional fashion designers. However, learning the skills and technology used by professional designers will benefit kids in the long run, as they will be able to apply these skills to a variety of projects or even their future career.
While kids can get started simply by putting together outfits, reading kid-friendly fashion blogs, and even learning to sew, the next step would be an online course or summer camp that teaches professional fashion design skills and software. In these courses, students will recreate the design process used by real fashion designers, acquiring the terminology and industry knowledge that is critical for a future in fashion. More importantly, though, kids will learn important skills like digital illustration using professional software as they create their own unique fashion collection.
The Bottom Line
Fashion design is an interest shared by many kids, whether for their love of self-expression through clothing or an intrinsic interest in design and style. Even if your kid doesn’t become the next Coco Chanel or Giorgio Armani, the technology skills and software that students will learn by pursuing their interest in fashion design are applicable to a variety of creative and technology careers.
